Dante Cup raises much-needed funds

The Dante Cup soccer tournament raised funds for a local project in Umzimkulu.

TWENTY-FOUR five-a-side teams of enthusiastic soccer players turned out at this year’s Dante Cup with their eye on the trophy, but it was a local community project in Umzimkulu that really won the tournament.

The Dante Alighieri Society is a charitable organisation that promotes a spirit of peace and understanding among people and cultures as well as the study of cultures and languages around the world. This is achieved through the offering of language courses as well as a variety of events. The society also organises a number of events to not only raise awareness about its own work but to raise funds for local causes.

Held recently at St Henry’s Marist College in Glenwood, the Dante Cup this year raised in the region of R8 000 for the reconstruction work of the Lourdes Mission Catholic Church in Umzimkulu which is managed by the Koinonia Giovanni Battista Foundation. This is an ambitious project that aims to revitalise a rural area suffering the effects of some ruinous social problems, with a very high level of unemployment and a worrying incidence of AIDS among the local population.
