Chamber appeals for help for flood victims

Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Spar Group have partnered to collect donations for flood victims.

THE Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with The Spar Group are encouraging residents to pledge donations for materials for those affected by last week’s devastating floods.

Suggested relief items include bottled water, filter masks, mold killer, insect repellent, towels, blankets, non-perishable food, baby diapers, bleach, brooms, mops, shovels, bleach wipes, hand sanitiser, triple-antibiotic ointment, work gloves, rubber boots, buckets, toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste) and batteries.

“The vulnerable in our communities face times of intense difficulty in the aftermath of the floods. As per previous estimates from just Durban, there are about 350 000 people living in informal settlements in the Durban Metro area. It is important that KwaZulu-Natal comes together as a community to assist those impacted to get back on their feet because beyond the concern over socio-economic circumstances, the management of the disaster can serve to perpetuate vulnerability,” said Dumile Cele, CEO of The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Through partnering with The Spar Group, Cele said the Chamber is calling on donations of any items to help all people affected by the floods, and through the Durban Chamber Non-Profit Companies network, these items will be distributed to as many of the affected people as possible .
Drop off points are The Durban Chamber Offices (Lion Match Office Park, 892 Umgeni Road) and all KWIKSPAR, SPAR and SUPERSPAR outlets in KwaZulu-Natal until Friday, 5 August at 5pm.
