Why reporting all crime is important

Berea police once again encourage the public to report all crimes no matter what level.

BEREA police are encouraging the public to report all crimes.

According to Captain PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, people who experience crime and do not report it because they believe it is not important, are actually doing a disservice to the rest of the community. “Firstly the police are not aware that a crime has taken place in that particular area and secondly, when the police personnel are deployed to work they are made aware of the areas affected by specific crimes, so its obvious that members will pay more attention to the hot spots thus preventing future crime or even arresting the criminals involved,” he explained.

Naidoo stressed, even if the crime may seem small, like a garden tool being stolen, it was important that the owner report it because criminals were known to return to commit more serious crimes. This, he said, could be prevented if the initial crime was reported.

“If a case is not desired, an occurrence book entry or an information book entry can be made so the police are made aware of the crime,” he added.
