Fundraising barrel race this weekend

Sailors young and old are encouraged to come down and support the Point Yacht Club's annual 'FUNndraising' NSRI Barrel Race Day is at the harbour this Sunday, 24 July.

THE Point Yacht Club’s annual on-the-water ‘FUNndraising’ NSRI Barrel Race Day takes place at the harbour this Sunday, 24 July.

Sailors young and old are encouraged to support the event and help raise funds for the Durban National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 5.

Craig Millar, Point Yacht Club commodore, said, “We are forever grateful to the incredible team that are always there for us in time of need. Considering the incredibly tough coastline on which we sail and race, it is always a relief knowing that the guys from NSRI are a call away.”

“Back home, the guys at Station 5 work tirelessly, volunteering their services. Like any organisation, it requires funding and the Durban’s yachting community use events like this one to give back and support.”

The ‘FUNdraising’ event will start with a morning on the water sailing on the bay, where the NSRI will be out in force and may even ‘high jack’ a few crew members and hold them up for ‘RANDsom.’ After the sailing, the day moves onto the PYC lawns for some live entertainment. During the land-based activities, there will be some fantastic give-aways.

Tracy Bowman organiser of the event said, “The day is dedicated to raising funds for the Durban NSRI base, who are desperately trying to purchase a new, more powerful rescue boat – for our safety. We managed to raise R30,000 at the recent Band on the Sand, organised by Wayne Smith. All of these funds will be handed over to the NSRI at the conclusion of our fundraising drive. After this we have a wine-tasting evening, which will also be used to raise money.”

Anyone wanting to get involved is invited to get in touch with the Point Yacht Club. Visit www.pyc.co.za or contact 031 301 4787 for more information.
