Mayville SAPS take to the streets to create carjacking awareness

Mayville police embark on carjacking awareness campaign to sensitise Manor Gardens residents about recent incidents.

MAYVILLE police took to the streets of Manor Gardens last Friday in an effort to create awareness about recently reported carjacking incidents.

Warrant Officer Patrick Zithulele Ngwane, communications officer at Mayville SAPS, said “We want to sensitise Manor Gardens residents about carjacking incidents which have been reported recently and give them preventative tips. These criminals target vehicles which are stationery while occupants are sitting inside the vehicle,” he explained.

Ngwane said the following measures can be taken to prevent against carjacking:

Be very vigilant of your surrounding and be aware of people loitering around your property.

Never leave your vehicle unattended whilst it is switched on.

Ensure that your driveway is well lit and look around before you enter it.

Never park on the roadside and remain sitting inside the vehicle.

If you are being followed, don’t pull into your driveway, drive straight to your nearest police station for help.

When you are in a hijacking situation, try to remain calm and don’t show any signs of aggression.

Do as you are told and never argue with the hijackers. Remember that they are very nervous as well.

Keep your hands still and where the hijacker can see them as to ensure him of your passive intent.

If you want to unclip your safety belt, ask if you could do so because any movement on your side could mistakenly be seen as if you are reaching for a firearm.

Notice everything possible about your attackers because you will be the most important witness in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Remember-you can replace your car, but not your life.
