Umbilo hijackers arrested

Two would-be hijackers were arrested by Umbilo police last night.

UMBILO police arrested two suspects for attempted hijacking on Wednesday night.

According to Lt Pumzile Makaula, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, a couple was seated in a vehicle outside a block of flats on Esther Roberts (Frere) Road. “It is alleged that two men wearing reflector jackets walked past them. They decided to go inside the flat as the two man looked very suspicious to them. However, as soon as they got out of the car, the two suspicious men reappeared.

“One of the suspects pointed a firearm at them while the other suspect searched them, demanding their car keys and cellphones,” she explained.

Makaula said a patrolling police vehicle appeared as the attempted carjacking occurred and the victims screamed out for help. “The suspects ran away and were chased by the police officers. They were arrested and the firearm was recovered,” she added.

Police are investigating a case of attempted hijacking.

Makaula once again reminded the community to be vigilant. “People must be aware of their surroundings and should not park and sit in their vehicles at awkward times. We encourage people to have tracking devices installed in their vehicles,” she advised.
