Armed gang robs jewellery store

A local security company has reported a string of armed robberies and hijackings in the CBD and Berea area over the past week.

A GANG of armed robbers used a sledgehammer to smash down the doors of a jewellery shop in the CBD on Monday 25 April, in the latest of a string of armed robberies and hijackings across the city.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said six heavily armed men held up the security guard at the shop at around 10.30pm before bashing down the door with a sledgehammer.

“The robbers tied up the security guard and fled with jewellery,” he said.

Durban Central SAPS attended the scene.

Jackson said the incident was the latest in a string of armed robberies and hijackings at business and residential premises in the CBD and Berea area.

“A gang driving a black Audi held up a security guard at a business premises in Buro Crescent in Mayville at 6am on Friday 22 April. The gang forced open the doors and fled with four computers,” he said.

In a separate incident, armed robbers held up a domestic worker at gunpoint in View Street in Overport at around 1pm on Thursday 21 April.

“Three armed robbers gained entry into the property through a door that the domestic worker had left open while she was cleaning. They tied her to a chair in the kitchen before ransacking the house and fleeing with a laptop and cellphone. No injuries were reported,” he said.

Mayville SAPS attended the crime scenes.

Jackson added that a motorist was hijacked in Chelmsford Road on Thursday 21 April while she was getting something out of the boot of her vehicle at around 8.30am.

“Two hijackers approached her on foot, held her up at gunpoint and demanded the keys before fleeing in her vehicle. No injuries were reported” he said.
