Beware of diamond scam say Point Police

Point police are encouraging the public to be aware of a con woman with a 'diamond' scam in the greater Durban area.

TWO precious stone con artists, who have been operating in Durban, have claimed another victim.

According to Point SAPS, communications officer, Captain BJ Simelane, a woman from the Point, reported the scam to the police at the station after she paid R60 000 for a precious stone.

“The victim said she had heard about the business opportunity and met the duo, an Indian woman and African man in town. They told her about this amazing opportunity where she could buy diamonds worth R300 000 for only R60 000. The woman said she was told to meet the two outside the Silver Sands hotel last Tuesday. At the meeting, they allegedly showed her the glittering stones, which looked like diamonds. As she handed over the money to them, they took the money and ran away,” he said.

Simelane said this was not the first incident police had been made aware of and believed the two suspects were operating in the Berea and Umbilo areas.
