Why remove speed calming?

A reader is questioning why it has taken so long for speed calming to be replaced in Umhlanga.

EDITOR – The Umhlanga Ridge Town Management Association who take care of the Umhlanga precinct had installed a number of speed “calming” devices at very strategic points on Palm Boulevard and Centenary Boulevard and this helped keep speedsters under control and also protected the rights of pedestrians.

We have all read the local community newspapers on the response of the Municipality on why these speed “calming” measures had to be removed – that these were in harmony with the approved specifications of the Municipality.

These have been removed and one would have expected them to be replaced immediately with the approved installations. However three months have gone by and these boulevards have become “Grand Prix” race tracks.

Pedestrians have to dice with death just to cross these roads and knowing how inconsiderate and discourteous our drivers are as they never stop expect for a few decent and responsible ones. I think the Municipality will only react when some one gets injured or dies on these roads and then you will have the Premier, the MEC for Roads and Transport and the Honorable Mayor converging on Umhlanga to score political points or when the ordinary people take to the streets with placards and burning tyres.

My simple mind would suggest that these “calming” measures should have been removed and replaced simultaneously.
