Umbilo licensing venue shut down after robbery

The Umbilo licensing department has been forced to close after thieves made off with R400 000 from the safe and all the department's computers.

THIEVES hit Umbilo licensing department on Sunday evening and reportedly stole R400 000 after cutting open the safe and stealing all the computers, crippling the centre.

According to media reports a police source said the guard was overpowered and tied up while the men cut open the safe which had R400 000 cash from license fees.

The KZN Transport Department has confirmed that the centre will be closed until furuter notice.
“It is quite disturbing to note the extent of the greed and audacity of the thieves, who show no care about plundering the services of the nation,” Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said in a statement.
The community is advised to use other licensing venues including Pinetown, while Umbilo is closed. Mchunu called on anyone with information to contact police.
