Carjacking task team nabs notorious five

A notorious gang responsible for a string of crimes has been arrested by a specialised carjacking unit.

POLICE arrested five suspects who terrorised communities in Umkomaas and are profiling them to check if they can be linked to robberies committed in Durban and surrounding areas.

During  November  the Provincial Carjacking Task Team arrested the five suspects aged between 26 and 29 for several cases including murder, attempted murder, house robberies, and carjacking. The suspects were arrested for three counts of house robbery, two counts of attempted murder, murder and carjacking. They were remanded into custody until 27 January 2016. The Provincial Carjacking Task Team had been conducting investigations into house robberies committed in the KwaMakhutha and Umkomaas areas during 2014 and 2015 when, on 18 December it managed to link the same suspects to a further two counts of house robbery that were reported in Umkomaas in November last year and a carjacking that was committed in KwaMakhutha in the same month. It is believed that a group of ten suspects was responsible for terrorizing the community of Umkomaas and KwaMakhutha pretending to be police officials. They appeared at the Umbumbulu Magistrates Court recently on the additional charges and were remanded into custody until 27 January 2016.
The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the Task Team for arresting the notorious gang . “We will continue to profile them to check if they can be linked to other robberies committed in Durban and surrounding areas. We are pleased that they will spend the rest of the festive season behind bars where they can do no harm to our citizens,” she said.
