Domestic worker wage increases

Employers of domestic workers are advised that the new rate increases for domestic worker wages kicks in on Tuesday, 1 December 2015.

The minimum wages in the Domestic Worker Sector have been increased with effect from 1 December 2015.

According to Jan Truter of www.labourwise.co.za,The extent of the increase depends on the location of the employer, as well as whether the employee works for more than 27 hours per week, for example the minimum rate for a domestic who works for more than 27 hours per week in any of our cities and most towns, is R11,44 per hour; for a domestic worker who works 27 hours or less per week, the rate is R13,39 per hour.

Wages will be subjected to a CPI plus 2.5% increase for the period 1 December 2015 to 30 November 2016.  The CPI***(for the lowest quintile)  six weeks prior to 1 December 2015 is 5.5%. This means that wages for this period was calculated as follows: CPI plus 2.5% for Area A = 5.5% + 2.5% =8%.
