Slain student’s mum receives honorary diploma at memorial service

A year after his brutal murder, Kurtlee Pillay's mother accepted a Fine Art diploma in his honour at a memorial service held today.

TRACY PILLAY, the mother of student Kurtlee Pillay  who was brutally killed a year ago, accepted an honorary Fine Art diploma at his memorial service this afternoon.

The diploma was handed over after Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design manager, Larina Naicker, gave an emotional tribute to Kurtlee at the service to remember and celebrate the youngster’s short life. Through tear filled eyes, Pillay proudly accepted the diploma on her son’s behalf.

The family proudly showed off Kurtlee’s sporting and academic medals, trophies and his first and last pair of shoes in a display cabinet at the memorial service.

Friends, family, work colleagues and students from the art school paid tribute to the young artist.

Wednesday, 4 November, was exactly a year since the brutal murder. The trial is set for February 2016.
