Cop impersonator arrested

A woman was arrested by police in the Durban CBD yesterday for impersonating a police officer.

A WOMAN was arrested for impersonating a police officer in the CBD yesterday afternoon.

According to Maj Thulani Zwane, provincial police spokesman, the Durban Central Field Unit members were patrolling along Victoria Street near a garage when they sported a suspicious woman who was in full SAPS uniform wondering down the street. “Members approached the female and asked her if she is a police officer. She failed to answer and failed to produce an appointment certificate,” explained Zwane.

The woman told police that she was a volunteer and the uniform she wore belonged to her father, who was a police officer. Members then arrested the 28-year-old. The suspect was taken to Durban Central police station where she was formally charged and will appear in Durban Magistrates’ Court soon while the investigation continues. Sergeant Gounden is holding the suspect.

The KZN provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended police for the arrest of the impersonator. “Law enforcement impersonators are creating an untrustworthy relationship between police and the public therefore they shall be dealt with by the full might of the law. We will investigate and see if she was not involved in any crimes in the province,” she said.
