Tapping business sends wrong message to students

A business owner has responded to Durban Chamber's request for businesses to support a student bursary fund.

EDITOR – Zeph Ndlovu – President of Durban Chamber of Commerce makes an impassioned plea for business to support the Durban Chamber student bursary fund (Berea Mail, 30 October).

It never ceases to amaze me that “business” is seen by many to be this never ending pot that can be tapped for every conceivable cause.

Every day, in all forms of the media, we read or hear about wholesale corruption, theft of government money, false qualifications, useless management in State owned organisations, fruitless expenditure, the list is never ending yet Mr Ndlovu is not moved to express his concern about that.

He is quite right when he says that our country is in crisis but I fail to see why business must continue to practise social corporate responsibility whilst the looting of State money goes along at speeds of a Formula one racing car.

Apart from the fact that the economy is spluttering along due to complete mismanagement by our useless government and business is tight in most sectors, if business did fall for this begging bowl approach it would send the wrong message that students can pillage, riot, burn, vandalise, intimidate etc. and yet still be entitled to be sponsored.

After seeing on TV the looting of the Fort Hare University bookshop by crazed students (all wearing hoodies to escape identification) I have resolved that my corporate social responsibility funds will be channelled to the SPCA where at least the dog does not bite you after you have given it a bone!
