When business makes a difference

Atlas Scrap got down and dirty on Monday morning as the staff did their bit to clean up Congella Park.

STAFF from Atlas Scrap in Umbilo got their hands dirty on Monday morning as they took it upon themselves to clean up Congella Park.

More than 100 staff members descended on the park, which is across the road from the company, and starting at the top, worked their way to the bottom of the park cleaning up the grounds and ponds for an hour.

Serge Bega from Atlas Scrap said the the staff were aware of the amount of rubbish in the park and the need to do something as a company to make a difference.

“The state of the park and the vagrants are a problem, and it's our idea to try our best to keep an eye on the park and keep it as clean as we can,” said Serge.

Ward councillor, Nicole Graham, said: “I think this is great. I think it is really productive when businesses take ownership of public space around them by keeping the spaces safe and clean. I had a productive meeting with the managing director of Atlas recently where we discussed a number of issues pertaining to Congella Park and the area surrounding their business. It's a great initiative and I do hope we'll see more of it in the future.”
