Special rates areas adddressed at forum meeting

The topic of Special Rates Areas was discussed at the latest Bulwer Community Safety Forum meeting.

THE subject of Special Rates Areas, previously known as UIPs, was the topic of conversation at this month's Bulwer Community Safety Forum (BCSF).

Lorraine Fouquereaux was invited by the BCSF chairperson, Heather Rorick, to discuss UIPs as there were rumours that eThekwini municipality was thinking of implementing this in the Glenwood area. Lorraine emphasized that there were too many flats rented in the ward, and a lot of the people that live in the area are pensioners and could never afford to have to pay extra on their rates.

Captain Thulani Ndlovu from Metro Police, who is new to the policing area, addressed residents and was very attentive to their concerns regarding the prostitutes and vagrants hanging around shopping centres. He said the reason vagrants did this was because the shoppers gave them money and food, and that the problem would not go away until people stopped this.

Other issues addressed was the speeding along Esther Roberts Road and the problem of noisy neighbours.

Capt Ndlovu explained that residents should phone 031 361 0000 with regards to these complaints and must get a reference number, so that the issues could be followed up.

The next BCSF community meeting will be on Tuesday 10 November at 6.15pm.
