Metro’s city-wide clean-up op reels in beggars

Metro Police arrested 27 beggars on Monday in a blitz clean-up operation around the City's intersections.

BEGGARS on the Berea were given their stern warning and at least 27 were arrested on Monday when Metro Police embarked on a city-wide clean-up enforcement operation.

Metro Police patrolled various intersections, including Musgrave’s notorious intersections, where one beggar who was arrested was allegedly found with a handful of bank cards. All the beggars were arrested for contravening the city’s recent Nuisance and Behaviour in Public Places By-law for ‘begging’, which prohibits begging for money or goods, whether by gesture or words.

EThekwini’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said each of the beggars arrested in the recent blitz operation were given summons to appear in court.

“In the event that the accused fails to appear, then a warrant of arrest is issued by the applicable court or magistrate. An arrest is then carried out by the relevant law enforcement authorities,” Mthethwa added.
