Do you know your music?

Musician Dave Wright and music lover, Hylton Forge, host music quizzes at Stella Football Club on the first Wednesday of the month.

CALLING all music lovers. The Durban Rock Alliance will host music quiz nights on the first Wednesday of the month, for people who have a good knowledge of music, and would enjoy a fun night out.

Founders, Dave Wright and Hylton Forge, have a passion for music and are attempting to turn creative music ideas into economic reality, while involving the community.

“We have followed music our whole lives and keep up to date with what's happening on the music scene. We are quite happy to spend money to go see bands perform and have had a few overseas trips to watch concerts. We like to think we know the music scene!” said Hylton.

The men said they had tried various ways to get people who enjoyed music together, as there were not many venues open to good music performances in the Durban area.

“Live-The Venue in Durban has closed and Red Door in Pietermaritzburg is closing down, and there's no outlet for this sort of thing. We felt we needed to create something, and after the efforts of organising monthly theme evenings didn't work, we came up with the idea to hold a special music quiz at Stella Football Club,” said Hylton.

“People attend to have a laugh and learn something! We have a vast knowledge of music, and we still enjoy learning a thing or two,” said Dave.

The quiz consists of a general music section where 30 questions related to music are asked. There is a genre specific section, with questions on certain genres, for example grunge or hip hop. Another section of the quiz is when five songs are played and participants have to identify the song and band. Another section is when two artists' faces are merged, and participants have to identify these people.

“Another fun section is when participants are tasked to identify photos of artists when they were children. We also blank out a band member from a photo and people have to identify who it is, or we blank out the name of a band on a CD cover, and people have to guess this,” said Dave.

“It's very interactive, sometimes cut throat with a serious element, but it's really fun,” said Hylton.

Anyone is invited to attend the quizzes at Stella Football Club, and at R20 a person, it is a cheap evening out.

Teams are to be made up of four members.

The next event will be on 2 September. Contact Dave on 083 353 6925 or Hylton on 082 853 5000.
