Illegal dumping a headache

Residents continue to dump illegally, despite a notice from the municipality.

EDITOR – I wrote a letter two weeks ago to the Berea Mail about the litter in my area, around Currie Road and Steve Biko Road.

The situation improved for a week but now it is back to what it was. Wednesday is not a rubbish collection day – Monday and Thursday are. A particular house in the road is student accommodation and I feel the main problem is that whoever is responsible for putting the rubbish out is not getting the timing right.

When they see the problem they have caused, they do not clean it up. I reported the “illegal dumping” to the Health and Environment Department. They responded promptly and sent out a notice explaining the law with regards to dumping and littering.

The circular states households in the road are taking out refuse on non-collection days and this was in contravention of city by-laws, as any refuse dumped on the verge without the use of proper baggage or placed there on any day other than collection day, is technically illegally dumped.

The city noted the different colour bags for refuse, and noted the collection day was Monday for the area.

What else can I do?

Any suggestions – write to dot.oleary@telkomsa.net.
