Schoolboy killed in freak accident

Bystanders watched as a 16-year-old Lesotho pupil was tragically killed while on a school outing in Durban.

A school boy has been killed in a freak accident in central Durban this afternoon.

According to Robert Mckenzie spokesperson for EMS, the boy believed to be about 16 years old was tragically  killed while on a school trip from Lesotho.

“The boy was part of a group which had been travelling in a bus along the narrow Dick King Street in Durban. Reports indicate that he had his head out the window when the bus passed a pole on the side of the road which struck the boy,” explained Mckenzie.

Emergency services, including KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics who responded to the scene declared the boy deceased at the scene. KZN EMS paramedics treated another child who had been a passenger on the bus but details of the child’s injuries and condition were not immediately clear at the time of this report.

Shocked and sombre onlookers quietly gathered at the scene of the tragedy which had been cordoned off by police who are investigating the incident..

“KZN EMS, we would like to send our sincere condolences to the child’s family and loved ones,” Mckenzie said.
