Police follow up, arrest cigarette thief
Berea police arrested an alleged thief on Friday after following up on information from a community member.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, “Constable Bunting followed up on information received and managed to track down and arrest the suspect who had allegedly stolen cigarettes worth R1000 from a business in Avondale Road last Saturday night.”
The suspect was allegedly seen throwing a brick through the store window before going in and walking out with the cigarettes. The witness contacted police.
“It was excellent investigative work by the officer,” added Naidoo.
Be safe ahead of big race day
Berea police are encouraging the public to keep belongings safe at the upcoming Vodacom Durban July, on Saturday, 4 July.
According to Lt PN Naidoo, Berea SAPS spokesman, there will be a high volume of vehicles in the area for the big race day, so he encourages using park and ride facilities. “Rather get dropped off, especially if you intend on having liquor because we will have a zero tolerance on drunk driving.”
Naidoo also advised people to keep belongings on them at all times. “Don't leave sunglasses, cellphones, wallets or car keys on tables as these small items that can easily be taken when not in sight. Criminals prey on unsuspecting victims so we encourage people to be extra vigilant,” he added.
