Berea SAPS mourn loss of “bubbly” colleague

RIP Warrant Officer Sanjoy Girithani.

BEREA police suffered another loss of one of their own last week when Warrant Officer Sanjoy ‘Ivan’ Girithani died after suffering a heart attack on Friday.

The death came as a shocking second blow to the station said Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer for Berea police, especially after the death of Warrant Officer PT Naidoo after an illness last month.

“Warrant Officer Girithani was one of our experienced police members who died as a result of a heart attack while playing golf in Pietermaritzburg. Members are very shocked and sad to lose such a good colleague who had excellent qualities as a policeman,” he said.

Girithani had started his career as a student at Berea SAPS in 1981, and proceeded to police college and became a Constable, Sergeant and Warrant Officer while at Berea. Naidoo said he worked in the Detective Services for at least four years before he started handling public complaints and was always a friendly face at the Berea Community Service Centre.

“He was a policeman who was easy to work with and a mentor for the younger members with his vast experience which spanned more than thirty years. He had a bubbly personality and will be sorely missed by all members.

“All at Berea are devastated by the loss of a second long-standing member in nearly a month, especially their expertise and helpful personalities,” he said.
