Car theft on the rise

Umbilo SAPS have noted a new modus operandi in car theft cases in the area.

UMBILO SAPS have received a number of reports from people who have had their motor vehicles stolen.

According to Sgt Beverly Manqele from Umbilo SAPS, in one case, a man advertised on the window of his motor vehicle, a white BMW valued at R120 000, that it was for sale and put his contact details on the notice.

A man approached him and introduced himself saying he was interested in buying the vehicle. He requested to test drive the vehicle and suggested the owner go along.

“They drove towards Umbilo and the suspect told the victim that he needed to go to King Edward hospital so that he could show his wife the car. They parked in Rick Turner Road opposite King Edward Hospital. They both went inside, and while they were inside the suspect told the complainant that he must wait by a bench as he was going inside the ward to look for his wife. The complainant waited a while, and then decided to go check on his car, to discover that it had been stolen. The suspect had disappeared,” she said.

She said vehicle dealerships were also being targeted with the same modus operandi, and vehicles had been stolen.

“Be warned and be careful when selling your motor vehicle. It may be helpful to request for the potential buyer`s identification to be used later as it may assist with investigation of the case,” said Manqele.
