City aims to fix up beachfront

Councillor Martin Meyer says the city needs to be proactive in dealing with inclement weather.

RECENT storms which hit the Durban beachfront, resulted in a lot of damage to infrastructure.

On a visit to the beachfront on Saturday, Berea Mail was surprised to see little has been done to fix broken wooden umbrellas which still lie strewn on the beach, especially with the festive season fast approaching.

According to ward 27 councillor, Martin Meyer, who carried out an oversite visit to the ward 27 beachfront, which stretches from Blue Lagoon to Suncoast, to ascertain the damage done by the recent and on going storms.

“I visited the beaches two weeks ago and have forwarded the concerns to the city. The council and Exco have approved that a study is done to ascertain the extent of the damage, and do a costing on the repair work. The city is taking this seriously, as the holiday season is upon us and we would like to have our beaches in pristine condition. I have also engaged with Parks and Recreation that the study should not be limited to focusing on the damage, but the city should also investigate to prevent such damage in future. It is becoming clear that we are facing more and more extreme weather, and it is important for the city to be proactive in dealing with this,” said Meyer.
