Sherwood Primary's Neha Seupersad will be accompanied with teacher Axel Batsch to Germany after winning the eThekwini Local History Museums’ 2014 Passbook Competition.

NEHA Seupersad, a Grade 7 pupil at Sherwood Primary has made her school extremely proud as one of the youngest winners of the eThekwini Local History Museums’ 2014 Passbook Competition. Neha joined four talented pupils in the grand prize which was a trip to Bremen, Germany this week. The winning participants will represent eThekwini Municipality at the ‘Night of the Youth Festival’ in Bremen on Sunday, 9 November.

Greg Connell, Arts, Culture and Sport teacher at Sherwood said the school usually takes the children on two excursions to heritage sitesduring the year but didn't want the pupils to miss out on the opportunity to enter the competition so added all four visits to Cato Manor, Bergtheil, Palmiet Nature Reserve and Pinetown Museum so they could get their Passbook stamped. “We are really proud of Neha because her essay was so good that they made a special arrangement for her to on the trip. It was only for high school pupils but her essay was comparable to those of the high school pupils,” he said.

The ecstatic pupil told Berea Mail, after the four visits, she decided to write her two-page essay on how the apartheid laws affected the community of Cato Manor, the gender discrimination she noticed while at the museum and the difference between how the early European settlers lived in comparison with modern South Africa. “I'm so excited and cannot wait. I had no idea I would win the trip. I'ts the first time I'm going to leave the country,” the academic and sports all-rounder said.

Axel Batsch, a teacher at Sherwood Primary, was also selected to go on the trip and will chaperone the pupils.
