Young sailor excels

Sail Africa, Livingstone Primary, Point Yacht Club, Jonsson Cup Pursuit Race

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD sailor Alex Thorpe, skippered a Gypsey in the Jonsson Cup Pursuit Race hosted by the Point Yacht Club on Saturday 25 October and achieved first place out of all the youth sailors sailing in the event.

His dad, Ian, crewed for him on the boat and overall they achieved a commendable 21st position out of the extremely competitive fleet of 52 boats, which included Lasers, Flying Fifteens, Hobie 16s and cats, among others, sailing in the event.

Alex is a graduate of the Water Rat Dinghy Sailing Programme run by Durban-based youth sailing organisation, Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation NPC.

After completing the required stages of the dinghy sailing programme, Alex then progressed to local club sailing with the Point Yacht Club.

Sail Africa is a registered non-profit organisation that offers sailing courses and activities to youth, including school groups, using its fleet of dinghies and keelboats. Go learn to sail on Sail Africa’s next Introduction to Dinghy Sailing Course for youngsters aged eight and upwards in the school holidays from 15 to 19 December from 9am to noon each day.
