Student begged for help minutes before dying

Shrivaar Panday a final year BComm student was on his way to write a test when he was killed as a result of a botched smash and grab incident.

A 22-year-old UKZN student who died after a smash and grab incident on Monday morning, allegedly begged for help when he drove his red Golf into an Engen garage on North Ridge Road.

According to Collen Mzobe, an attendant at the garage, the student, *Shrivaar Panday, was a well known customer at the garage who lived a short distance away. “He drove in very fast and spoke loudly which was unusual so I knew something was wrong,” said the visibly shaking attendant.

“He shouted, “Collen come, please help me.” When I got to him he asked me to call an ambulance because someone had stabbed him. I ran inside to phone an ambulance and another lady there also tried. When I came back to him I opened the door and I saw all the blood and he said I must tie his leg because he was bleeding too much,” he said.

The traumatised petrol attendant said he got the first aid kit from the office and managed to tie the leg. He said he knew where the youngster lived and rushed off to get his parents.

“Nobody was there so I spoke to the security and a neighbour and told them to inform the family. The ambulance still hadn’t arrived by the time Collen’s got back to the petrol station. He was devastated to learn that Shivaar had unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

“Its very sad. He was a good guy. We used to go to the same gym. I am traumatised and can’t believe it, I’m still shaking and can’t work.”

Members of Shrivaar Panday’s family arrived at the garage but were too traumatised to speak to Berea Mail.

Panday was a final year BComm student who was on his way to write a test at university said one of his cousins.

Mayville police are investigating the murder.

  1. Absolutely shocking. Wasted life, how sad for his parents. I hope there are witnesses and that he gets caught, not on, really comon, how savage, a life for what, cellphone, laptop, car?????

  2. And of course because he isn’t some famous celebrity, no huge reward will be offered for the senseless loss of a promising young life..what a waste! When will the powers that be acknowledge that SA is in a state of emergency??

  3. This title of this article is disgustingly dehumanising to him. Begged for life minutes before dying, like he was too helpless to do anything for himself. All for the sake of reporting the story first and to catch the headlines.

I was a good friend of Shrivaar’s and anyone who knew him would tell you the same thing.
Just because those ‘Members of Shivaar Panday’s family’ didn’t want to talk to you’ll, it doesn’t mean they were too traumatised. It’s because they didn’t want you’ll to make him into just another one of your stories, further dehumanising the person that was Shrivaar Panday.

There’s a sad amount of respect lacking in this article, and I honestly wish that Lorna Charles feels ashamed for the way she set it.
If none of the family consented to this, the maybe you should have done the decent thing and not even written it.

Thank You for making my friend a statistic when its too late to defend himself.

  4. Every year, final year students from UKZN are brutally killed, its like these bloody criminals are targeting us!. All these years of investment into our studies, only to get killed by these senseless animals.

Crime is beyond control in this country, and it takes ‘significant’ people like Senzo Meyiwa for there to be adjustments to certain laws for more protection, thats ridiculous, we clearly lack strategic thinkers in our government.

Rest in Peace Shivaar, my sincere prayers of healing and strength to your family and friends.

  5. It is an insult that you publish an article about our brother of this nature and don’t even spell his name correctly. You and your publishing network should be ashamed. It is an absolute disgrace. I absolutely agree with Venay Singh. Appalling and rudimentary. It’s sad that media blemish our brother like this.

  6. I am a Journalist myself, but I am commenting on this in my own personal capacity having known the deceased personally. This article is flooded with errors. It was poorly written and heavily sensationalised. The name stated is not even correct. It really is unnerving and sad to read.

  7. This is what the stupid ANC has reduced our country to.crime in South Africa is spiralling.what a tragic loss to the family of the boy that passed away. The way I see it, the ANC should be charged by the international court of justice at The Hague, for allowing thousands of innocent citizens of our country to die , all because the ANC wants to entice the millions of votes of criminals for the ruling party, by being so lenient with sentences for criminals.what a bloody disgrace.shame on u ANC!

  8. What an absolute waste of a promising life, ended before he really started. Unfortunately in our country, this is something that occurs too often. Taryn, Thakur and Vinay my sympathies for your loss but lashing out at a journalist is not going to make any difference, rather do something more constructive for his memory, his legacy….the article said “allegedly begged for help” and this is exactly what was reported here in Jhb and Pta

  9. That is why the streets need to be kept clean of vagrants and beggars. With them around, you don’t just don’t know what you are dealing with when you are driving out there. Why is this country so full of vile monsters?

  10. This is very tragic. The life of an innocent youth taken for no reason. The police are too useless to do anything! The morningside area is getting out of hand now and I think the community needs to take the stance of shoot first and ask later.

  11. The title and content of this article is insensitive. He was a great person and he will be missed. I agree fully with the comments made by Venay and Thakur Singh.

  12. I wonder what time did the ambulance arrived , if only they where fast enough .
This young guy would have being recovering and this family by this side .
All media networks need to wake up including the government , they need to provide jobs even if it small , then only killings will drop “abit”
Lastly my sympathies to the grieving family and friends of Shivaar
    Solute

  13. How on God’s green earth is this a “botched” smash & grab? It’s almost as if you’re trying to say that the bad guys are not trying to kill anyone. Please guys, call it what it is, a callous murder for a cellphone or a few rands.

    And RIP Shrivaar

  14. Another young life lost, I am lost for words. This young man could have been a CA one day or even a president of this country. #Cry our beloved country# May his soul rest in peace. I pray for his family and may the Lord God be with them at this hard time.

  15. another statistic to highlight the crime in our country, wonder if this is going to given the same attention as senzo meyiwa…..

  16. I’d just like to convey my deepest condolences to all who knew shivaar ,and I feel its extremely inappropriate for people to be worrying about the way the article was written or errors made in his name! Come on guys that’s not even the issue at hand, empathy is needed in this time

  17. to the anonymous idiot below:
Maybe if the same happened to your close friend or family member, then you will understand why the people below are angry and upset with the way this article is written. I fully agree with how they feel coz I know what its like to have a loved one just treated as another media statistic whose name they cant even spell correct. he may be no longer with us, but for god’s sake the media should at least give him the dignity he deserves.

  18. SAPS..Can we please get R250,000 for this murder as well.
This is ridiculous..so freaking uncalled for!
It is time to close the borders!!!!!

  19. When will this government learn that we need the death penalty back so we can live in freedom again.
This country is done for. Leave or be killed thats there attitude.
    Zero eduction.
    Its over.

  20. “Botched smash and grab” ??? Is this woman for real? what r u trying to say that there’s a good and bad way to do crime? did u even bother to read what u published? You are insinuating that these MURDERERS wern’t intending to kill him. How do you even know that? you weren’t there! the only person who knows what actually happened is the person who is now dead. and the fact that these people who stabbed him were armed with knives tells u that they WERE INTENDING TO KILL SOMEONE!!!!! Someone was senselessly killed! stop trying to make the painful death of this person dramatic! “Botched crime” .. crime is crime! it was cruel murder!

  21. I am devastated to read about the death of Shrivaar Panday. I knew the young man from the time when he was still in High School, We stayed in he same building.

Yesterday morning i received a text message from my mother informing me of his passing. I was shocked, i got heated and eventually i cried. I still can’t believe his no-more.

He was a kind, down to earth and respectful young man. I can not begin to imagine what your mother is going through right now.

We should fight harder against crime. Morningside used to be a relatively safe area but i suppose a lot has changed over the years.

I wish to send my condolences to Panday family and friends.

    Regards

  22. I don’t know Shrivaar, his family and friends but my heart aches when I read this. What a terrible loss of a young life. I am a mum, sister, aunt and I cant begin to comprehend the anger, disbelief, sadness and a whole range of emotions that the family are feeling… My condolences… I pray that God gives your the strength and courage during this traumatic and difficult time. I pray that the vile monsters that inhabit our streets and violate the innocent are wiped off the face of this earth forever…

  23. journalists write for sensationalism, getting the paper/story sold. I sometimes wonder wonder whether they do care. Personally, I believe treat the cause and the bloody government needs to take heed. Sort this crime that’s spoiling this beautiful country. We are to blame for putting you in parliament. Next round you will know if you dont get your shitty corruption in place. It’s YOU that is killing the nation and journalists write sensibly…

  24. I keep thinking about this poor boy and his family. All that love and hard work that went into raising him and helping him reach his potential only to have someone callously cause his life to end within minutes. I am so angry driving around today and as unfair as it is, I looked at all the vagrants, addicts and beggars around me with hatred in my heart. Is there nothing, we as citizens can do – maybe march through the street to highlight that this kind of tragedy needs to be treated with urgency and these scourges in our society removed and not shown mercy.

  25. I think we as a country need to push the rural communities back to farms and areas that they came from, we are all tired of the
Squatters and we feel bad because they had less, well my parents earned the life they live and they worked hard but they had to pay for what we have, they weren’t given it, and feeling bad does nothing when incidents like this happen,And in this country we can see criminals have more rights then people!!!!

  26. What a stuffed up country SAfrica has become. No-one can enjoy life anymore. No freedom to walk or even drive around safely. Your life is worth NOTHING to all the criminal bandido’s around these days. NO R E S P E C T for anyone anymore. These blooming murderers want everything for free without putting in hard work. I am so sick to death of hearing about innocent people getting robbed, mugged, mutilated, tortured……it just goes on and on whilst the fat cat government sits on it’s fat rear end and pretends all is well and dandy in the land of ‘freedom’. No one is free there. All live in homes that look like Fort Knox. Is that free ? Stick it where it fits best. So glad I left that all behind years ago to be safe in my new home. Now I LIVE. To this poor boys family, my prayers go out for you in this horrible time. I am so angry to hear this terrible news. Trauma like this in SAfrica is all over ours news here, and it seems to be escalating by the minute. Time for people to stand together and fight crime themselves, if that pathetic police force and government are doing sqwat !!

  27. Innocent people are not safe in this counrty and that is due to criminals having freedom.the top brass have armed security to protect them, wat about us, maybe if each and every one of us arm ourselves we stand a fighting chance. The criminal elements out there will at least then be afraid of sometihing and not attack us.we blame the government but who put them there

  28. bring back death penalty , if u are caught that u killed someone then u should be hanged right there and then , no human right as well as rapist and molesters , if u steal then ur hand should be chopped of immediatly end of story

  29. Our deepest condolences to the Panday family through this most difficult time.my views on the attack is…He was murdered in cold blood..thats the beginning and end of it.Forget anything about hijacking, he was stabbed because the attackers wanted to kill him.You dont stab someone because you want to play with them.the ANC should wake up and bring back the death penalty. We all live in fear for ourselves and our families, cant go out and live like normal people. We always have to look behind our backs in everything we do.For as long as criminals can murder people and get away with it , crimes will continue to spiral. The justice system is a joke in SA , so I believe we should arm ourselves to be able to defend ourselves..and if you or your family or property is threatened , shoot to kill..no mercy for the criminals , because no mercy is shown upon us.Defend yourself and your family at all costs !!!

  30. How sad leaves. Me speechless this beautiful child a loss to ukzn and no words to console his family.
    Vee

  31. Terrible!! Such a young life with so much ahead of him. Sending love and strength to the family for their terrible loss. Why are they just killing people? Death penalty should be reinstated

  32. HEARTFELT condolences to family, words insufficient,HORRENDOUS.WHYYYYYY did you kill him and countless innocent hardworking south Africans.WHEN is it going to end and are we going to allow this to continue
