SA team off to karate world cup

Sonny Pillay will attend the World Karate Congress in Germany next week.

THE president of the National Karate Federation KSA, Kyoshi Sonny Pillay, will attend the World Karate Congress in Germany during the first week of November.

Pillay, who has just been appointed the vice president of the Indian ocean countries (Mauritius, Reunion, Madagaskar, Seychelles and Mozambique), will join others from 125 countries, at the bi-annual congress.

Pillay will also lead the KSA Team South Africa delegation to the World Cup that immediately follows the World Congress from 7 to 9 November.

The karate legend, who has been involved in the promotion of the sport for the past 47 years, expressed his confidence in the KSA national team under the guidance of the KSA CEO Carlos Vilela, the official manager on the World Cup 2014 tour to Germany.

“Our national fighters have been very busy in preparation for the world cup under the close scrutiny of KSA director of coaching Ian Le Roux at the high performance centre attached to the Free State University in Bloemfontein and are fighting fit for the event. I feel deeply honoured to lead the SA delegation and represent the rainbow nation at the World Congress,” said Pillay.

He said he believed South Africa was destined to host the WKF World Cup, the largest showpiece in karate events, in the near future.
