Volunteer nurses needed for Mammathon

CANSA is looking for nurses and doctors to help with breast screening events.

THE Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) will be visiting every TAFTA Home in the region as well as Westville Correctional Centre during the month of October to perform free clinical breast examinations for women who might otherwise struggle to be tested.

In order to test the 1000 to 2000 women, they need 12 nurses per day for at least one week.

They will also be running a Mammathon Day at their offices at 619 Umbilo Road, Durban on Friday 31 October where the team will perform this same examination for any woman who wishes to attend. The cost of the check up at the offices will be R50.

“CANSA can only make the dream of testing large numbers of women a reality if enough of local doctors and nurses will volunteer a day of their time to help. So far, The LIFE Hospital Group has come forward with wonderful support, but the more professional hands we have, the more check-ups we can do. One nurse can check around 25 ladies in one day. Next month we plan to take prostate testing to the men in our old age homes,” said Linda Cipolla from CANSA.

CANSA will be holding a half day 'refresher' training course for their volunteers prior to the start of the Mannathon Event. Volunteers are also needed to help with the paperwork so the nurses can get on with the examinations.

“We appeal to the professional nurses of our area to support us in this mission to test as many as possible of the less able women in our region. Caught early, cancer has an excellent cure rate and screening is the best way to catch this horrible disease in its early stages,” said Linda.

If you can help in any way call CANSA on 031 205 9525 and ask for Linda Cipolla or Nadia Baderoon-Ball.
