ATM bombed inside Florida Road store

Police crime scene investigators, Hawks and the bomb squad are investigating the ATM bombing on Florida Road this morning.

FLORIDA Road was cordoned off outside Holden’s KwikSpar on Wednesday morning after robbers allegedly gained access into the store int the early hours of the morning, through the roof and used explosives to blow open an in-store ATM and safe which contained an undisclosed amount of money.

Staff were forced to wait across the road from 6am as SAPS, the Hawks and Bomb Squad processed the scene.

Washington Rigaba, a Florida Road resident who lives close to the supermarket said he was shocked to hear of the bombing.

“I live across the road and didn’t hear anything, but my neighbour said she heard a loud bang in the early hours of the morning but thought a monkey had jumped on her roof,” he said.

Rigaba said in light of a daytime robbery at a bank on the road recently, he really felt unsafe.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that robbers had allegedly bombed the ATM inside the KwikSpar and had taken an undisclosed amount of cash. At the time of going to press, Police were still at the scene.

Naicker said further information would be provided once the preliminary investigation had been completed,
