Berea police advise the public to be vigilant of criminals elements even while driving.

Cellphone recovered after Musgrave mugging

A woman was lucky to have her cellphone recovered last Tuesday afternoon after she was mugged on Essenwood Road.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the woman was walking along Essenwood Road when her phone rang, she answered it and while busy on a call, a man threatened her with a knife. “He grabbed the phone and ran away. Luckily a police van went past and she stopped them and told them what had happened. They gave chase and arrested the suspect and recovered the phone,” he added.

Car thieves caught red handed

Two potential car thieves were arrested after a man noticed them breaking into his car in Morningside on Saturday evening.

“The man locked and parked his car on Claribel Road and went to visit someone. He noticed two men approach the vehicle and screamed. A police van was patrolling the area and saw the suspects, they gave chase and arrested the suspects,” he said.

When the police officers came back to the vehicle, they noticed the door lock and ignition of the car was damaged. The suspects were detained at Berea SAPS for attempted theft of motor vehicle.

Burglar caught in the act

Berea police arrested a man for housebreaking in the early hours of Monday morning after he was caught with computer equipment in a Morningside home while the alarm went off.

According to Lt PN Naidoo, ADT Security received a complaint of an alarm going off in Tenth Avenue and responded and noticed a man pulling a computer screen from the window of the home. The police were called and the suspect was arrested on charges of housebreaking and theft.

Be crime aware

The public is advised to try to avoid parking motor vehicles on the road if there is parking available in complexes. “Vehicles parked on the roadside provide an opportunity for criminals to break in and if there are valuables left in the vehicle it creates another reason for them to break in,” said Lt PN Naidoo.

Naidoo said motorists and passengers must always be vigilant when driving on the road. “Try not to use ATMS on the roadside as you always get opportunistic criminals hanging around watching you, rather use the ones inside a centre where there is help if you have a problem.”
