Superstar violinist to perform at KZNPO series opener

World superstar violinist to take to the stage at the first of the KZNPO's World Symphony Series spring season.

AFTER a sell-out concert with standing ovations in Cape Town, world superstar Shlomo Mintz comes to Durban on Thursday, 28 August.

He will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the Durban City Hall for the opening of its Spring Symphony Concert season.

This is a concert not to be missed. Preceding the violin concerto the Orchestra will perform Mendelssohn’s overture to a Midsummer Night’s Dream. After interval the audience will be wowed by the well-known, ever-popular Brahms Symphony No 4.

Shlomo Mintz has dedicated his life to music and is regarded as one of the foremost violinists of our time. Esteemed for his impeccable musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique, his maturity brings an intellectual approach and an admirable balance of tone and technique to his performance.

“It is an honour for us to be hosting such an exemplary musician and illustrates the high esteem in which this Orchestra is held by international soloists,” said Bongani Tembe, chief executive and artistic director of the KZN Philharmonic.

The Spring Symphony season consists of eight Thursday night concerts in the Durban City Hall running from 28 August to 23 October, excluding 16 October. All concerts commence at 7.30 pm.

By booking for the full season of concerts one becomes a subscriber and achieves a 25 per cent discount on individual concert prices.

Pensioner subscribers get 30 per cent off.

From 6.30pm to 7.15 pm on Thursday the KZN Youth Wind Band will perform free of charge on Church Walk outside the City Hall, a delightful welcome from these talented youngsters to an evening of musical excellence.

During the season, before each concert at 6.15pm, one can attend a 45 minute lecture in the Playhouse Alhambra Room, across the road from the City Hall. The lectures are delivered by local music experts and give concertgoers a deeper understanding and appreciation of the music to be heard in the concert.

Refreshments and light snacks may be purchased in the foyers of the Playhouse and the City Hall before and after the talk.

The entire precinct of the City Hall and surrounding parking garages is patrolled by a private security company, in addition to the City’s security presence, ensuring a safe and pleasant inner city experience for everyone.
