Berea police did exellent work bringing down crime statistics this week as well as arresting a car thief with repeat offences.

Ladies clothing recovered

BEREA police were patrolling along the corner of Norfolk and Currie roads on Friday at 4.30am when they noticed a suspicious man carrying a 20 litre bucket and a shoulder bag.

“Members stopped and searched the man and noticed the bag was full of ladies clothing and the bucket was full of electrical appliances,” said Berea SAPS Communications Officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo.

The suspect man could not give police a reasonable explanation for having the clothing and appliances and was charged for being in possession of property suspected to be stolen.

He was detained at SAPS Berea.

Bag snatching couple arrested, handbag recovered

A woman walking along Old Dutch Road at 7.30am on Friday, was lucky to have Berea SAPS arrive at the right time and recover her stolen handbag.

Lt Naidoo said the woman was approached by a young man and woman who threatened her with a knife and demanded her bag. “They grabbed her bag and ran away just as a police van went past. The woman alerted the police and the suspects were spotted and arrested and the property handed back to owner,” he said.

The suspects were detained at SAPS Berea on charges of robbery.

Housebreaking implements recovered

A vigilant car guard's efforts to take down the number plate of would-be car thieves helped Berea police arrest two suspects, one of whom was linked to other car thefts.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, at about 7pm on Monday night suspects damaged the computer box and bonnet of a Toyota Fortuner in the Morningside area. “The suspects got disturbed and sped off but a car guard took down the registration number of the get away vehicle, a Silver Toyota Runx with two occupants in the vehicle,” explained Naidoo.

The RunX was later seen on Ridge Road and a chase ensued. Metro police finally stopped the vehicle in Henry Road and the vehicle was searched and both car and housebreaking implements were found. “The RunX had false a number plate and license disc. The suspects were arrested for attempted theft of motor vehicle.

When a profile was done at Berea police, it was revealed that the one suspects had four previous cases of theft of motor vehicle in the Berea area alone against him.

Be crime aware

Lt PN Naidoo appealed to the public to never leave valuables visible in vehicles as it could create an opportunity for criminals to break in. “Do not leave laptops, cellphones or wallets in vehicles. Please light up premises at night especially the perimeter wall as this could be a deterrent to criminals,” he added.
