City has ignored ratepayers

A resident of Morningside feels the municipality are not taking into account the opinions of its ratepayers.

EDITOR – With response to the article on the rezoning of a 12-storey building in Sandile Thusi Road.

Having bought in the area many years ago, Morningside has changed drastically from a quiet leafy suburb to a busy cosmopolitan area, with an influx of businesses, restaurants and their respective patrons. Already with the overflow of traffic from Florida Road, this has a negative impact on the residents in the area, as they are constantly disturbed by noisy patrons at all hours of the night and day. Furthermore, with the area servicing four schools the Cowey/Montpelier Roads, have become major traffic corridors.

This has proven to be unsafe for many of the elderly residents who reside in this area and who rely on getting to the various destinations for their business on foot, as is it equally dangerous for young children. Delivery trucks flying up and down Montpelier Road at all hours of the day and night are also a cause for concern, which will be further exacerbated should this building be approved. There are more than enough restaurants, shops and centres within the Morningside area and having another centre with the same congestion and traffic problems which is synonymous with these type of buildings is going to become a reality.

Once again the requirements/needs/demands of the rate paying public within five blocks of this area have been ignored by the City. It will be interesting to note once the plans have been submitted, how the developers and town planning will preserve the Victorian Masterpiece below ground.
