Cause of fire unknown

MUNICIPAL cleaners and volunteers were perplexed about the cause of a fire at Congella sports fields this morning (31 July).

Cleaners were working on clearing up the rubbish and rubble at the fields when a fire was seen burning on a nearby bank.

The fire grew in size and burnt along the bank, fuelled by the rubbish, plastic and dry leaves.

Huge clouds of black smoke rose over Umbilo and showered black ash on workers.

The eThekwini Fire Department arrived on the scene and questioned who had started the fire. One fire fighter was convinced it was the workers, however no one seemed to have an answer. Upon assessing the fire, the fire fighters were able to douse the flames.
