Tight encounter for Glenwood hockey

Glenwood beat Kearsney in a recent hockey clash.

THE Glenwood High School 1st XI hockey team produced a competitive performance recently when they convincingly beat Kearsney College by four goals to one.

The opening 15 minutes saw Glenwood dominate play completely and race to a three-goal advantage.

Nhlanhla Nyawo was first on the scoreboard when he deflected the ball at the back post into the goals from an accurate cross from Keegan Hezlett. Kuhle Cele doubled the goal tally with a brilliant solo effort. After winning the ball in his own 22m area, he ran the entire length of the pitch to clinically beat the Kearsney keeper.

Michael Labuschagne made sure of the two goal lead with a number of excellent saves, the best being a stick save off the line from a defensive short corner.

Nyawo was in the action again when he combined with James Dellis to finish off a well structured pattern of play to extend the boys’ in green to a 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half was a tighter encounter with both teams working hard to dominate play. Keasrney drew first blood from a well executed short corner which saw the ball netted in the bottom left corner. Shortly before the final whistle, the boys in green clinched their fourth goal, Cele’s second, and put the game beyond a spirited Kearsney College.

The final score of 4-1 to Glenwood was a fair reflection of the game although both teams contributed to a tough, skilful display of schoolboy hockey.
