Glenwood man shot in carjacking

A man was shot in a hijacking in Marcus Avenue.

A GLENWOOD man is recovering in hospital after a hijacking in Marcus Avenue on Saturday night.

According to resident, Ivan van der Merwe, he heard a woman screaming frantically around 8.15pm and went out to see where it was coming from.

“I heard a gunshot and decided to wait until I saw a car drive off before going to see what had happened,” he said.

Van der Merwe said he found a man lying on his back at the bottom of the driveway at 30 Marcus Avenue, but as the lighting was bad, he couldn’t see where he had been shot.

“Another resident came out and saw the wound on the right side of the man’s chest. We tried to keep him still and shouted for the Metro Police officer who lives in the block of flats to help us. We loaded the man into the police officer’s car and took him to hospital. He was operated on yesterday (Sunday),” he said.

According to Van der Merwe, the man had driven into the garage on the property when two men followed the car into the garage, and closed the door. A struggle ensued and one of the men bumped the door open. The woman who was in the car with the victim, got out and ran into the building, screaming. This is when the driver was shot.

“The men got into the car and drove off. The car was damaged on the left hand side and was found on Sunday in Umbilo, with the gearlock on and the doors locked,” said Van der Merwe.
