Open Air School pupils excel

Four Open Air School pupils outdid themselves at the 2014 National Championship for the Physically Disabled.

THE 2014 National Championship for the Physically Disabled took place in Stellenbosch recently and four pupils from Open Air School were a part of the KZN team, and represented their province at the games.

All four pupils outdid themselves, and not one went home empty handed.

In judo, Both Sinethemba Xaba and Sihle Mntungwa took the gold medal in their weight classes. Sihle won weight category 66kg and under for ages U19 as well as 21 to 23 years old, securing two gold medals in Judo.

In goalball, the junior girls team which Nontethelelo Hlungwanae was in, came second and the junior boys team, which Sihle Mntungwa was in, for the first time beat the Eastern Cape and won the gold.

In athletics, S'celo Mhlophe ran against athletes of all ages and competition, which was extremely tough. In the 100m he took the silver medal, and in the 200m he took the bronze. The following day, he won the long jump, with a jump of more than five metres.
