Design school robbed again – 4 days later

Six more computers stolen from the Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design just a four days after another robbery.

THE Centre for Fine Art Animation and Design suffered another loss this week just four days after being broken into by a gang of thieves.

Dr Nanda Soobben, a veteran political cartoonist who is head of the design school, took to Facebook to express his loss after a second break in.

“We have been hit again!! They broke down the gate that was reinforced with chains !!”

On Sunday morning the Morningside design school was broken into with 10 Apple Mac computers containing important student design and animation work as well as Soobben’s Apple Mac containing work in progress for his new book. The whole thing was captured on camera. You can view the videos here.

In the second robbery six more computers were taken and video footage showed the back gate of the school was broken by a different vehicle to the BMW that was seen reversing into the parking lot before driving off in the Hyundai i20 with the five robbers.

A devastated Soobben who was still reeling from the first break in told Berea Mail they had “done everything” from their side to safe guard the school with cameras, electric gates and fences and armed response security but unfortunately the incident occurred during the shift change. “What do people do? I really can’t understand it. We did not get over the first robbery and then it happened again. There is just more anger, frustration and helplessness.
The CFAD campus moved from the heart of central Durban to the “charming and safer” Morningside to an Edwardian villa, that has been declared a national monument as it is nearly 114 years old. Soobben said extra security measures would be taken after meeting with the regional security services manager on Friday to discuss further measures after the two incidents.
