Ward 33 ready to vote in new councillor
After three months without a ward councillor, the residents of Ward 33, eThekwini, will cast their votes in Wednesday’s by-elections.
THREE main political parties, namely, the Democratic Alliance (DA), uMkhonto Wesizwe (MKP) and African National Congress (ANC) will, this Wednesday, September 11, take to the polls in their quest to win the municipal by-elections in Ward 33, eThekwini.

After the national elections in May, former Councillor Sakhile Mngadi (DA) was redeployed to the KZN Provincial Legislature, leaving a vacancy in the councillor seat. He was elected after a sweeping victory in 2021.

In the week, all three contesting parties have held compelling campaigns in the streets of Ward 33, all serving a platter of promises. Ward 33 has, among other challenges, been plagued by vandalism of infrastructure, illegal occupation of buildings and sports facilities, and crime. These are the challenges that the residents hope their new leader will take on.
Special votes will be conducted on Tuesday, September 10, to accommodate those in retirement homes and those with disabilities. Ward 33 covers the areas of Bulwer, Glenwood and Umbilo. According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 39.97%.
