Women power

To celebrate Women’s Month this August, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will host their second Early Spring Season concert on Thursday, August 29 at the Playhouse Opera, starting at 19:00.

The internationally acclaimed Panamanian American maestra Kalena Bovell conducts the second and closing concert of the season. She opens her programme with Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, a popular work for string orchestra, which takes its name from St Pauls Girls School in London – one of the many pieces he wrote for the school’s students.

Indian-American pianist Pallavi Mahidhara, a much admired figure with SA audiences, returns to wow her admirers performing Saint-Saëns’ glittering Piano Concerto No 2. Composed in 1868, it is the most popular of the composer’s five piano concertos.

The second half of the programme comprises Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony which draws on a number of older musical traditions.

For those who prefer not to self-drive to town for the two evening concerts, buses will run from Caister Lodge (R60 return, departing at 18:20); Westville Senior (R80 return, departing 18:10); St Agnes, Kloof (R100 return, departing 17:50); Grace Church, Umhlanga (R100 return, departing 18:10). Bus ticket sales close at 16:00 on the Monday before each concert. Concert and park-and-ride tickets can be booked through Quicket while subscribers can book for both via the KZNPO offices.
