Withdrawal of domestic violence cases will not be entertained – Police Head

Withdrawal of gender-based/domestic violence cases continues to be a hindrance in prosecuting suspects. This time around, Umbilo SAPS has put its foot down and has advised women against this perpetual behaviour. This move will not only be seen during this Women's Month; it will be implemented henceforth.

OVER the weekend, a 34-year-old teacher was arrested for assault with GBH (grievous bodily harm) and domestic violence. The suspect, who accused the complainant of being in contact with her ex-boyfriend, remains in custody pending a bail hearing. This case, among others, continues to be recorded, hence a bold move by the Umbilo SAPS to host a significant campaign against gender-based violence (GBV).

The Station Commissioner of Umbilo SAPS, Colonel Ximba, urged all victims of domestic violence to break the silence and not to protect perpetrators who commit these heinous crimes. “All victims will be treated with respect and dignity in a victim-friendly room, and withdrawal of cases will not be entertained,” he said.

On Thursday (August 8), Umbilo SAPS, together with other stakeholders, namely, the CPF, the KZN Blind and Deaf Society, the UBHAQA Youth Desk and the Department of Health, will be launching a Women’s Month awareness campaign.

“The main purpose of the campaign is to reinforce efforts to address crimes committed against women, ie, domestic violence, rape and assault, to mention a few. The launch will start from Queensmead Mall at 09:00 and will end at Victoria Mxenge Hospital. All members of the community are encouraged to attend,” said Umbilo SAPS spokesperson Captain Pumzile Biyana.
