Local youth dominates airwaves

Musgrave's very own Mereece Dry is set on making an impact through the airwaves, not only to carve her own broadcasting path but also to influence local youth. She is confident that with the right role-modelling, other youngsters, too, can reach for the stars.

WHEN a youth radio was launched two months ago, one young woman knew her path to broadcasting was paved and illuminated sooner than she had expected. She forged her way through and grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Mereece Dry, who lives in Musgrave, is one of the presenters of the newly launched Fly FM. She is no newbie to the airwaves as she comes with loads of experience which she acquired while she was at Durban Youth Radio. She learned the ropes from seasoned and talented broadcasters. “It laid the foundation for my career in the broadcasting industry,” she said.

Her unwavering passion for broadcasting has kept her on this journey. “My decision to join Fly FM was influenced by my passion for broadcasting and my eagerness to learn from experienced professionals in the industry. I wanted to be part of a dynamic team where I could grow, develop my skills and make a meaningful impact on youth.”

Apart from broadcasting, Dry has a strong interest in acting. She said she loves getting into character, whether on camera or radio. “Anything involving a camera excites me. Although there is a lot going on right now, acting is something I’m definitely going to pursue,” she added.

She is energised about her new venture and hopes to influence her listeners in an impactful way and help shape their future. Her own future is set for the stars as she aims to become a broadcasting household name with a legacy to be etched for years to come.

Fly FM’s radio station, based in Umhlanga, already commands a solid listenership and impressive outreach programmes.

Its station manager, JD Mdu, said there was a gap in the airwaves – a voice that caters for the youth – hence the station’s leap to launch a youth-specific radio station.

“Commercial and community radio stations in general are not catering specifically for the youth market due to the lack of buying power of the audience. While information is available on numerous platforms for the market, radio offers the unique opportunity for live interaction between the audience and the presenters.”

“Our primary mission is to open education, career and business opportunities. We are not held back by bureaucracy. We are enthused by the public and business response so far. It’s beautiful – our events are well received and our programmes are growing,” he said.

As a parting shot, Dry has a solid piece of advice for her listeners, especially the youth: “Your dreams are valid. You’re good enough. Believe in yourself – as cliché as it may sound, that’s the only way you succeed in anything you do.”

Fly FM can be streamed live on www.flyfm.co.za.
