THE Eco-Team at Manning Road Methodist Church continues to reach new milestones – they collected and recycled 100 000 glass bottles over a period of two and a half years last July. After increasing their recycling efforts, the Eco-Team has now collected 100 000 more glass bottles from July 2023 to February of this year and additionally collected two tons of other recyclable materials.

Richard Neville from the Manning Road Methodist Church Eco-Team says that they couldn’t do it without the amazing people from all over Durban donating glass bottles and recyclable materials to them all year round.

“We pick up recyclable materials from all around Berea – we go to Bulwer Park every morning, we also get materials from Horse ’N Hound in Durban North, and we pick up along the beachfront. The people who donate also help us a great deal. They are from all over Durban, and donations are constantly coming in,” said Neville.

Neville said the glass bottles have been sent off to a glass recycling hub, and the other recyclable materials, including cardboard, paper, aluminium
cans, food cans and plastic have also been sent for recycling.

“Our main goal is to encourage church members and local residents to collect recyclable materials and make the area more eco-conscious. We don’t get a lot of money back for recycling, but we take half of the proceeds and the rest goes towards the church.”
