Cash-in-transit heist leaves two security guards in critical condition

A suspect was fatally wounded during a cash-in-transit heist off Warwick Avenue in Durban CBD this morning.

ACCORDING to Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for Advanced Life Support Paramedics, a cash-in-transit heist off Warwick Avenue in Durban CBD, just after 08:00 morning (January 29), has left two security guards in critical condition. It is alleged that a group of armed men robbed the security officials and opened fire.

“ALS Paramedics Medical Services arrived to find the South African Police Service already on the scene. Two security officers were found with multiple gunshot wounds and in critical condition. Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilise both men on the scene before they were rushed to a nearby Durban Hospital for the urgent care that they required.”

A suspect in the robbery has sustained fatal injuries, and according to ALS paramedics, “there was nothing more paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene. The [rest of the] armed men got away with an undisclosed amount of money,” said Jamieson.

At this stage, the events leading up to the incident are unknown, however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.
