Wanted murder suspect nabbed by police

A suspect wanted in connection with a murder case was apprehended by police this week, and police also seized eight firearms from the suspect’s home and the suspect’s mother’s home.

A RELENTLESS multi-disciplinary search for a murder suspect by the police, members of the Hawks, Metro Police and private security officers yielded positive results when a 31-year-old suspect was arrested at Point, Durban, on Monday.

According to South African Police Services spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspect defied police orders for him to stop, and a high speed vehicle chase ensued.

“The man was eventually outsmarted and ran out of space to run to and was arrested. A search of his vehicle led to the recovery of two pistols with 32 rounds of ammunition. Investigations led the investigating team to his place of residence on Chippendale Road in Newlands East where four rifles and 120 rounds of ammunition were found hidden under the bed,” said Netshiunda.

Netshiunda said further investigations pointed the men of law to his mother’s residence in KwaMashu and upon police arrival, two security guards who were guarding the premises abandoned their two rifles and fled.

“The suspect appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 23, on a charge of failure to safeguard firearms. He was remanded in custody and will be back in the dock on January 26. The suspect was wanted in connection with a murder case in which the son of a police officer was gunned down on Mfolozi Road at C Section in KwaMashu on November 25, 2023,” said Netshiunda.

The police spokesperson said the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of crimes in the province or elsewhere in the country. His vehicle was also confiscated for further investigations.
