International Rooibos Day: 6 facts about the proudly South African blend

Make yourself a cuppa and read about what makes Rooibos such a special blend.

TODAY (January 16) is International Rooibos Tea Day. If you didn’t know, this proudly South African blend is loved and appreciated all over the world.

Here are six facts about Rooibos tea:

1.  The blend originated in the Cedarberg mountain region in the Western Cape over 300 years ago. Farmers have tried to grow it elsewhere in the world, but the soil, climate and conditions are not conducive.

2. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and can be enjoyed by anyone, including babies.

3. Skin products containing Rooibos make it ideal for all skin types, especially eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and acne-prone skin.

4. The tea is exported to more than 30 countries across the globe.

5. Harvesting and pasteurising Rooibos is a tightly controlled process which ensures that the end product is always 100% Rooibos, no matter which brand you drink.

6. Rooibos has numerous health benefits if drunk daily: It can lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels, improve heart health and is packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
