Jameson Park blossoms anew
Ward 27 councillor Ernest Smith partnered with the Mitchell Park Trust to work on an operational plan to revitalize Jameson Park in Morningside.
WARD 27 councillor Ernest Smith partnered with the Mitchell Park Trust, which is comprised of Parks/Zoo officials and members of the community who act as custodians of Jameson Park to find a way forward in revitalising the local recreational space.
“In time’s past, Jameson Park was one of the gems in Morningside where it was renowned for its flower garden compromised of various rose bushes and species of rose plants, along with koi fish in the pond, which formed the background for many weddings and functions. Sadly, Jameson Park has lost this appeal over the years and only has a few beds with flowers, a non-functional fountain and is – at this point – a shadow of its formal self,” said Smith.

According to Smith, this operational plan includes Jameson Park having an official dog park as well as bringing a certain flair of colour and design back to the park.
“This process started about two to three months ago where volunteer teams were clearing the pathways in the park, which (at different points) were covered with a foot of sand and grass. The second phase, which we are in at present, is sprucing up the entrance of Jameson Park with hardy plants, such as agapanthus, which also flower seasonally with various colours, such as blue, white and purple, thus adding colour to the park,” said Smith.

“There are also plans afoot to increase the parking facilities in Jameson Park while the dog park is in the last stages of development. The vision for Jameson Park is simply to have a colourful, enjoyable and welcoming atmosphere for everyone in the area, with input by the people for the people,” said Smith.
