‘Spreading’ Mandela Day spirit with sandwich drive

With a whopping 1 200 loaves of bread anonymously donated to the cause, the sandwich drive was a heartwarming hive of activity.

AS organisations across South Africa celebrate Nelson Mandela Day today, July 18, The Union of Jewish Women are hosting a sandwich drive at the Durban Jewish Club.

The event is hosted in conjunction with the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, and several local charities and businesses were invited to join in to help make sandwiches for those in need.

“We have several corporates, 18 charities, and community organisations coming to make sandwiches. They will work together, hopefully networking and making new connections. The charities will get to take their sandwiches home with them to distribute further afield,” explained Sue Jacobson, one of the co-chairs for The Union of Jewish Women.

Jacobson described this year’s event as ‘chaotically divine’, saying it was a hive of heartwarming activity on the site.

“We have run this event every year, and it’s grown into what it is today. We have hosted the drive in different formats – this year we invited our own beneficiaries to the event. They come and help make sandwiches to take back with them,” explained Jacobson.

Jacobson said they received 1 200 loaves of bread from an anonymous donor.

“We asked the community to donate peanut butter and margarine. Our donors include Eden schools and various people from our community,” she added.
